Alfred "Fred" J. Witmeyer

August 13, 1941 — April 28, 2023

Denver, Indiana

Alfred J. “Fred” Witmeyer, age 81, of Denver, Indiana, passed away at home on Friday, April 28th, 2023, after a battle with congestive heart failure and other complications. He was born in Miami County, Indiana, on August 13, 1941, the son of Ovid and Ardella (Hoover) Witmeyer.

Fred graduated from Deedsville High School in 1959.  While in high school, he began working at Galllahan’s.  After graduating, he began working on the railroad before being drafted into the United States Army, where he served for two years being stationed in Germany.  Returning to the working force, he then worked for Moorman’s Feed.  On September 21, 1968,  in Peru, Indiana, he was married to Sandra L. Newby.  They were married fifty years, but were unable to formally celebrate their 50th due to her suffering a ruptured brain aneurysm three days prior their celebration, and her passing a few weeks later in 2018.  Fred and Sandy’s home always had an open door and and invitation to dinner for family and friends.  He loved sitting on his back patio with his family and friends, drinking a beer, and listening to the great Country Oldies.

Fred farmed his family ground and many surrounding farms until 1986.  He then began working for Thermogas which later became Ferrell Gas.  He worked a short time with Midland Lumbar before his retirement in 2003.  He was a member of the VFW in Peru, Indiana.

He is survived by his three children, Shannon (Rose) Witmeyer, Melinda “Mendy” (Brad) Rodeffer, and Fleet (Dusti) Witmeyer; six grandchildren, Alleshia (Terry) Wheetley, Bridget (Nick Shepard-significant other), Chanelle (Jordan Telfer – fiancé) Witmeyer, Fleet (Kaitlyn Fording – significant other) Witmeyer, Joey Witmeyer, and Hunter Rodeffer; and seven greatgrandchildren, Terry and Kody Wheetley, Journey Shepard, Kaysen and Lincoln Telfer, and Oakley and Ledger Witmeyer.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sandy; and both of his sisters, Myra Radel and Linda Witmeyer.

Visitation will be from 4-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 4, 2023, at McClain Funeral Home, Denver, Indiana. Following Fred’s wishes, cremation will follow, and he and Sandy will be together once again.
