Mrs. Ardys Reed, 95, was born May 28, 1925, and died Thursday, April 29, 2021.
She led the quintessential military lifestyle until her pilot husband retired near Mexico, Indiana in 1969. Ardys was born in Lafayette, Indiana. After graduating from Brookston High School as valedictorian, she was working for the post office when she met the love of her life. Though she was quite prim and proper, she was "chaperoning" a girl friend from her hometown on a road trip to Denver, CO where on a blind date she was introduced to a serviceman from Wyoming. He was so smitten that he proposed to her on top of Pike's Peak. She wisely responded, “not until you come to Indiana and meet my parents!”
Ardys married Thomas B. Reed on April 16, 1949. Her USAF Lt Col husband preceded her in death in 1990. As her husband kept volunteering for the next faster airplane to fly, there were frequent transfers, and she birthed four sons in four different states. They all were blessed to come to her bedside at Duke's Hospital with their wives and talk to their mother before she passed.
Ardys was born to Morrison Dale and Cecile Moore Charles, both from Indiana. Surviving are her four sons: Keven C. Reed (Kiyoko), Fleming Island FL; Allan T. Reed (Deborah), Danville IN; Brian B. Reed (Rhonda), Macy IN; and Robin R. Reed (Diann), Mt. Crawford VA; along with twelve grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.
Her sons are forever grateful to a parent who taught them good manners and made sure they completed their homework assignments diligently and on time. She was a woman of strong faith, a member of several social and charitable organizations, and a volunteer with a local literacy program. When her husband retired from the military, they settled into the farming community of Miami County, IN. They were steadfast supporters of the Methodist Church in Mexico.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 2021, at McClain Funeral Home, Denver, Indiana. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Mexico, Indiana, alongside her husband and his parents.
