Betty Gail Lewis, 85, Twelve Mile, passed away at 11:25 p.m. on Friday, August 19, 2022, at Miller’s Merry Manor, Logansport.
Born August 28, 1936, in Cass County, Indiana, she was the daughter of Jacob Russell and Goldie Pearl (Wiles) Coffing. On November 22, 1962, at the Metea Baptist Church, she was married to Edward Joe Lewis, and he preceded her in death on June 18, 2021.
Betty was a lifelong member of Metea Baptist Church and lived in the Twelve Mile/Metea community her entire life. She graduated from Metea High School in 1954 and then attended beauty college where she earned certificates in cosmetology and desairology. She owned and operated the Farmerette Beauty Barn outside of Twelve Mile and practiced her homemaking skills by baking thousands of pies, putting up hundreds of quarts of canned goods, and raising and processing her own beef and chickens for many years with her husband and son. She loved collecting hats, quilts, cookbooks, sharing recipes with others, and spending time with friends at the Corinth Brethren Church making homemade noodles.
Survivors include her son, Douglas Joe Lewis, Logansport, to whom she dedicated every moment of his life making sure he was well taken care of. She also is survived by three sisters, Rachael Stewart, Mishawaka; Nina Warner-Lynch, Rochester; and Joan Coffing, Florida; several nieces and nephews, including her niece, Twila (David) Collins, whom she considered the daughter she never had.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers, James Richard Coffing, Donald Leroy Coffing, Kenneth W. Coffing, Dewey Dean Coffing; and one sister, June Irene Garrow.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. (Noon) Saturday, August 27, 2022, at McClain Funeral Home, Denver, Indiana, with Pastor Cole Westwood officiating. Betty would encourage all ladies to wear a hat if they feel so inclined. Burial will be in Metea Cemetery, Metea, Indiana.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until Noon on Saturday, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Camp Millhouse.
