Donald Max Montgomery, 91, Peru, passed away at 7:59 a.m. Saturday, December 10, 2016, at Dukes Memorial Hospital, Peru.
Born August 9, 1925, in Grass Creek, Indiana, he was the son of Everett Henry and Lena Pearl Kimbell Montgomery. On March 21, 1944, in Grass Creek, Indiana, he was married to Betty Marie Montgomery, and she preceded him in death on August 29, 2016.
Don graduated from Grass Creek High School in 1944, and was an active member of the New Waverly United Methodist Church. He served the United States Army as a member of the mounted cavalry unit. He was retired from AT&T and held memberships with the V.F.W., Moose Lodge, and AT&T Pioneers.
Don had a lifelong passion for horses. He was Past-President of the Indiana Quarter Horse Association, the Hoosier Palomino Association, the Kokomo Saddle Club, the Kokomo and Indiana Horse and Pony Clubs (Both of which he helped found,) and for many years worked as a show judge for the Palomino, Buckskin, and Pinto Associations. He was active with the horse programs with different 4-H organizations and was co-owner/operator of No-Rancho-Yet-O, along with his wife, Betty.
Don is survived by two daughters, Sheri Lynn Montgomery, Peru; and Pamela Sue Montgomery Shively and husband Steven, Peru; seven grandchildren, Megan L. Lippincott, Peru; twins, Andrew L. Lippincott, Hayfield, MN; and Brianne L. (Roy) Timmons, Peru; Virginia Marie (Ronnie) Miller, Ft. Myers, FL; Dustin Adam Shively, Peru; Sarah Beth (Adam) Lawson, Noblesville; and Jacob Miguel Montgomery Shively, Peru; and eighteen great-grandchildren, with one more on the way.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Darrell Everett Montgomery, Forest Harvey “Frosty” Montgomery, and Junior Harold Montgomery.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 20, 2016, at New Waverly United Methodist Church with Pastor Mandie Gould and Pastor Chris Rife officiating. Burial will follow in Ever-Rest Memorial Park, Cass County, Indiana.
Visitation will be from 4-7:00 p.m. Monday, December 19, 2016, at McClain Funeral Home, Denver, and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association or New Waverly United Methodist Church.
