Gertrude A (Swayer) Hiers

Gertrude A. “Gertie” Hiers, 87, Mexico, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, November 20, 2017, at her residence.

Born August 1, 1930, in Mexico, Indiana, she was the daughter of Henry and Edna Miller Swayer.  On April 17, 1949, at the Mexico Church of the Brethren, she was married to Melvin Hiers, and he survives.

Gertie was a 1948 graduate of Jefferson Township High School in Mexico, Indiana.  She was a member of the Peru Church of the Brethren, and she served her community as a volunteer Pink Lady at Dukes Memorial Hospital.  Gertie worked as a beautician in the Mexico community.  She enjoyed traveling, cross-stitching, reading, but most of all, spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Trudi (David) Gibson, Terre Haute; Becky (CL) Lutz, Peru; and Kim (Tim) Deardorff, Rossville; grandchildren, Hilary (Ben) Gibson-Blank, Heather (Brian) Thomas, Hali (Josh) Cartee, Heidi Gibson, Kellie (Steve) Gochenour, Kevin (Nikki) Lutz, Greg (Jamie) Deardorff; Joe (Stacie) Deardorff; Ross (Margaret) Deardorff; nineteen great-grandchildren; and one sister, Erma Bowyer, Peru.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, John, Byron, and Charles Swayer.

A Memorial Service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 24, 2017, at the Peru Church of the Brethren with Tim Deardorff and Pastor Phil Cruea officiating.

Visitation will be from 1-5:00 p.m. at the church on Friday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Peru Church of the Brethren or Dukes Hospital Auxiliary.
