Karl Edward Smith

Karl Edward Smith, 82, Twelve Mile, passed away at 4:35 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2009 at his residence.

Born October 16, 1926 in Hammond, Indiana he was the son of George Michael and Letha Fern Ulerick Smith. On June 2, 1947 in Twelve Mile, he was married to Divola F. Bloomer, and she survives.

Karl was an active member of the Twelve Mile United Methodist Church for seventy-six years and a forty-year member of Twelve Mile Lions Club.

Karl was drafted into the U.S. Army March 15, 1945 and went to boot camp at Camp Wheeler in Macon, Georgia. He served in the field artillery during WWII in Korea and the Philippines. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in May 1946.

He began his working career at RBM in January 1945 as a handler and assembler. He then started to work for Jim Kummer as a Job Methods Improvement Proposal Reviewer. In 1947, he was promoted to Assembly Tool Engineer and implemented improvement suggestions by employees. In 1963, he began working at Switches, Inc. He was promoted to General Manager and Vice-President in 1970. In 1980, he bought EDLO Sales and Engineering from Eulan Ulerick, and he moved the business from Huntington to Logansport. Karl owned and operated EDLO until 2001 when he sold the business.

Surviving besides his wife are one son William E. Smith and wife Martha, Edmond, Oklahoma, and daughter Karla C. Padfield and husband Timothy, Twelve Mile; six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren; four sisters, Marjorie Henson, Rosanna Scott, Phyllis Wicker, and Martina Meyers, all of Logansport.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Christine E. Smith in 2002.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at Twelve Mile United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Twelve Mile.

Friends are invited to call from 4-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Karl and Divola Smith Scholarship Fund at the Twelve Mile United Methodist Church.
