Malcolm G. Shoemaker, 84, Denver, passed away at 8:35 a.m. Friday, March 19, 2010 at his residence.
Malcolm G. Shoemaker was born March 22, 1925 in Denver IN to Dwight L. and May L. (Leedy) Shoemaker. He was a 1943 graduate of Jefferson Township High School. He lived his entire life in Denver, other than during his time in the service.
Malcolm served in the Army Air Corps from 7/43 to 11/45. He was stationed in Cerignola Italy and was a flight engineer and gunner on the crew of a B-24 Liberator bomber, flying missions over Europe.
Malcolm was a retired carpenter and a 50+ year member of the Carpenters' Union Local 615.
Malcolm was a member of the Mexico Church of the Brethren and a Past Master and 50+ member of the Mexico Masonic Lodge #347. Active in his community where he was a former Boy Scout Leader, he served as a trustee for the North Miami School Board, director for Four County Council, member of the Westlawn Cemetery Board, and was a founding member of the Denver Fire Department. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #14 and the Grissom Air Museum.
In April of 1953 Malcolm started building his home in Denver and in December of that year he married Joan McGuire of Mexico. They resided there since that time. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, two sons, David Shoemaker of Dallas TX and Brent (Cheryl) Shoemaker of Denver, and one daughter, Nancy (Robert) Grimes of Dayton IN, three grandchildren, Mark Grimes and Stephanie Grimes (companion: Christopher Valenta), of Lafayette IN, Shelby Shoemaker, Denver, and one great-granddaughter, Morgan Valenta; five step grandchildren, and six step great- grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters, Gwen Maus, Peru, Marcia (Ray) Steele, Wabash, Connie (Doyal) Hunt, Peru, and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are sister-in-law Guinevere Green, Logansport, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Lyman and Rachel McGuire, Denver. He is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers-in-law, Floyd Green, Herschel Maus, and Wayne McGuire.
