Phyllis Mae Robbins Johnson, 87, Twelve Mile, passed away Monday evening, March 7, 2011 at Howard Regional Health Systems, Kokomo.
Born September 22, 1923 in Cass County, Indiana she was the daughter of the late Oran William and Ruth Hazel Irvin Robbins. She was married to Russell Eugene "Buck" Johnson on June 28, 1947 in Twelve Mile, Indiana; he preceded her in death in February 1976.
She was an active member of Skinner Worship Chapel, near Twelve Mile. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Cass County and Indiana Retired Teachers, Colonial Dames, XVII Century, and the Society of Mayflower Decendants.
After graduating from Twelve Mile High School, Phyllis attended Indiana University in Bloomington where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in Accounting. She then returned to IU after teaching for several years to get her master's degree in Education.
She retired in 1988 from Logansport High School having taught business education. She began her career in teaching at Mays High School. While in Rush County, she met the man that would become her husband and later moved back to her hometown and began teaching at nearby Chili High School, which later incorporated into North Miami High School.
Phyllis was a talented musician and enjoyed sharing her piano skills at church and with the Over-the-Hill Gang. Phyllis was a very active member of the Twelve Mile community. She wrote for many years for the Mile Post and was very active in recording the history of her family and Cass County.
Survivors include three sons, Robert W. Johnson and wife Gale, Carmel; Richard W. Johnson and wife Bobbi, Peru; and Thomas R. Johnson, Twelve Mile; three grandsons, Benjamin T. Johnson, Ft. Wayne; Christian R. Johnson, Kokomo; and Michael P. Johnson, Greenwood.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Wilma Rusk and Marilyn Faudskar; and brother, William Robbins.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 12, 2011 at Skinner Worship Chapel, near Twelve Mile with Pastor Tom Robbins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from noon to 2:00 p.m. before the funeral at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Riley Children's Hospital.
