Samuel Eugene Hoover, “Sam”, 86, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, May 31, 2017, at his farm, in Denver, Indiana.
Born on January 2, 1931, he was the son of Orval and Alma (Snell) Hoover from Twelve Mile, Indiana. On December 4, 2004, in Plymouth, Indiana, he married Mary Sieg and she survives.
Sam was an active and faithful member of the Twelve Mile Lions Club for years. He was well-known as the joyful Santa at Christmastime to many kids. He graduated as president of his class from Twelve Mile High School in 1949 and held a county record in the mile run for numerous years. He retired as a farmer but also, as an entrepreneur, he owned and operated Twelve Mile Skelgas and ran a very successful excavating business, Sam Hoover Excavating, for most of his adult life. He enjoyed reading, investing in commodities, spending time with family and being at the farm.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by son Mike (Diane) Hoover, of Plymouth, Indiana, and their children, Matt, Ben and Kyle; son, Monte (Missy) Hoover of Indianapolis, Indiana, and their children, Brad and Allison; great-grandchildren, Austin, Emma, Roscoe, Jacoby, Danyelle and Sierra; step-children, Julie (Mark) Gibbs, Michigan; Janice (Perry) Pruitt, Noblesville, Indiana; Jonella (John) Black, Illinois; Daniel (Judy) Sieg, Corydon, Indiana; and step son-in-law, Todd (Ellen) Stillson, Plymouth; step-grandchildren, Maureen (husband Jonathan), Jacob, Benjamin, Luke, Bobby, Andrew, Rachel, Jonathan, John, Jessica, Caleb, Sara, and Hannah; sister, Rosalee (Hoover) Ratliff; and brother, Raymon Hoover (wife Karen).
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Roberta (Wilburn) Hoover, his parents, brother, Ross Hoover, and step-daughter, Jane Sieg Stillson.
A funeral service will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 4, 2017, at McClain Funeral Home in Denver, Indiana with Pastor Lowell Ott officiating. A time of visitation with family and friends will be from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. prior to the service. Private burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, next to Roberta, in Mexico, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Marshall County Community Foundation or the Twelve Mile Lions Club.
