Stephen E. Wernz, 72, Peru, died at 10:25 a.m. Friday, Dec. 3, 2010, at Dukes Memorial Hospital, Peru.
He was born in Gary on Oct. 2, 1938, to Gene and Virginia Scritchfield Wernz.
He was married to Donna A. Pavey on March 21, 1965, in Peru. She survives.
He graduated from Peru High School in 1957. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and U.S. Trotting Association. He raised and trained standard bred horses.
He retired from CSX Railroad as an engineer in 1999.
Stephen is survived by children, Kurt Wernz, Peru, Kathy A. Sunday and husband, Bob, Denver and Kandace B. Hattery and husband, Kendel, Peru; grandchildren, Kurt Wernz, Kristopher Wernz, Brandi Wernz, Taylor Wernz, Cameron Wernz, David Sunday, Brianne Chumbley, Katelyn Hattery and Kassanda Hattery; three great-grandchildren; and siblings, Logan Wernz and wife, Kathy, Fairglade, Tenn., Rick Wernz and wife, Robin, Suwanee, Ga., and Beth Kitts and husband, Robert, Crown Point.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at McClain Funeral Home with Pastor Dave Beebe officiating.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Westlawn Cemetery in Denver.
Memorials may be made to Relay for Life, North Miami FFA, Salvation Army or Mooseheart.
