Walter Dean Cornell

Walter Dean Cornell, 91, Elkhart, passed away at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at Eastlake Terrace Senior Living Center in Elkhart.

Born March 27, 1921 in Denver, Indiana he was the son of the late Jay Denzil and Margaret Elizabeth Grimes Cornell. On September 30, 1945, he was married to Delores Levon Taylor, and she preceded him in death on November 9, 2001. They celebrated fifty-six years of marriage together.

Walter graduated from Peru High School and was an Aircraft Radio Operator during World War II and again during the Korean War, which inspired his interest in becoming a licensed amateur radio operator. He retired from the Bendix Missile Plant in Mishawaka, Indiana. He then retired from the Cook Nuclear Power Plant in Bridgman, Michigan. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite.

Survivors include one son, Terry Ray Cornell and his wife Linda Ruth, Mishawaka; ; one brother, Ronald Gene Wibel and his wife Julie Ann, Mokena, Illinois; one daughter-in-law, Gretchen Louise Cornell, New Kent, Virginia; one sister-in-law, Edna Aletha Cornell, Fort Wayne; six grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Larry Lee Cornell and one brother, Gordon Leroy Cornell.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at McClain Funeral Home, Denver. Burial with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Miami County Military Rites Unit will follow in Westlawn Cemetery, Denver.

Visitation will be from noon until the time of service on Saturday at the funeral home.
