Zakary Eliason McClain, 17, Peru, passed away at 4:31 p.m. on Wednesday, June 2, 2021. He was the longtime beloved therapy dog and greeter at McClain Funeral Home in Denver, where he worked for the last decade comforting families during their times of loss.
Born in early 2004, Zak's first adventures in life were relatively unknown, we were only able to know his age from a microchip that had never been registered. In 2011, he found himself in a home with 107 other canines. He was the 47th dog rescued out of that situation and placed into foster care at Noah's Ark in Kokomo by the Kokomo Humane Society. After being placed on the "destroy list" due to some medical issues, and finally removed, he was able to be rescued by Bradley A. McClain of Peru alongside his best friend, Bob, the cat. After overcoming tremendous medical hurdles, he found himself in a daily role of comforting guests at the funeral home, sitting with many during arrangements and even snuggling up next to children during services when they had lost a parent.
Zak took his role of office manager very seriously, making sure the staff at the funeral home always followed his demands. He enjoyed protecting his manor from the dreaded UPS man, always making sure that they understood his castle was guarded by a ferocious canine. Other than his disdain for delivery people, he loved all humans.
Zak is survived by his owner, Bradley A. McClain, Peru; his work family, and many many friends who always made sure to say hello when they would visit the office.
He was preceded in death by several great friends who had always taken the time to sneak him a few treats or play with him when he demanded their attention.
If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Kokomo Humane Society, who gave him the opportunity to go on to help and comfort hundreds of people throughout the last decade, or you can just take your favorite dog out for a cheeseburger and tell them thanks for being a part of your life!
Zak will be laid to rest with his good buddy, Bob, his stuffed elephant, and a green dragon. He lived a life not long enough, but was a faithful companion until the end. Some say they are just pets, but they are so much more. Rest in peace, buddy, you were the best boy ever!
